Minimum Qualifications Non-Competitive: Bachelor's degree in the natural sciences and two years of post-degree professional research experience in an appropriate field, or a Master's degree in the appropriate field and one year of post-degree professional research experience in that field.
Preferred Qualifications: Knowledge of biochemistry and genetics. Mass Spec or other analytical testing experience. Experience in clinical testing. Strong skills with excel. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Experience communicating results to the medical community.
Duties Description The Research Scientist 1 will work in the Newborn Screening Program’s Tandem Mass Spectrometry (MS/MS) laboratory and Follow-up. The incumbent’s primary tasks will be focused on sample processing and testing for the primary screening tests within the MS/MS inherited metabolic disease screening laboratory. In addition, the incumbent will also learn related follow-up area functions, which include calls for repeat samples and referrals.
Additional Comments This position may require travel throughout New York State including overnights to areas not served by public transportation.

Promotion salaries are calculated by the NYS Office of the State Comptroller in accordance with NYS Civil Service Law, OSC Payroll rules and regulations and negotiated union contracts.
