Minimum Qualifications This title is part of the New York Hiring for Emergency Limited Placement Statewide Program (NY HELPS)* and applicants must meet the following minimum qualifications to be considered for this position:
Required experience: Currently registered with the Commission on Dietetic Registration, the credentialing agency for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics AND two years of experience as a nutritionist or dietitian in an institutional or community services setting.
*A master’s degree in nutrition, clinical dietetics, food service, public health, public administration, or health services administration may be substituted for one year of general experience.
Duties Description • Oversee, monitor, and provide technical assistance, training, and guidance to AAAs in the development and operation of various nutrition programs for older adults. Provide guidance to ensure compliance with the Older Americans Act, as well as other federal and state statutes and regulations.
• Conduct monitoring of nutrition programs and services. Examine documents, observe operations, and conduct interviews to determine if the approved program plans and formal guidance are being followed.
• Follow monitoring with prompt preparation of letters and reports identifying program strengths and deficiencies and citing items for corrective action as well as recommendations for follow-up action.
• Identify problems and health and safety situations or potential health and safety situations in local programs. Discuss appropriate follow-up with NYSOFA supervisory and executive staff.
• Participate in the development of State Office for the Aging regulations and guidelines concerning nutrition programs.
• Assist with the agency response to federal and/or state oversight agency inquiries, as appropriate.
• Participate as directed in NYSOFA Disaster Preparedness and Response activities.
• Travel may be required (approximately 15-20%), including during evening and weekends, depending on mission and assignment.
Additional Comments *There is no examination required for appointment to a NY HELPS position. Candidates hired via NY HELPS will be appointed on a permanent non-competitive basis and will begin a probationary period.
At a future date (within one year of permanent appointment), it is expected that NY HELPS employees will have their non-competitive employment status converted to competitive status, without having to take an exam. Employees will then be afforded with all the same rights and privileges of competitive class employees of New York State. While serving permanently in a NY HELPS title, employees may take part in any promotion examination for which they are qualified.
