Duties Description • Ensure that all instructions are followed, the quality of the work is satisfactory, and the work was performed on schedule.
• Diagnose and repair a variety of mechanical, electrical, electronic, and hydraulic repairs on gasoline or diesel powered automotive, heavy motor trucks and construction equipment.
• Recommend the purchase, repair or rebuilding defective parts to keep both vehicle and equipment downtime to a minimum.
• Make recommendations on a case-by-case basis on whether repairs and maintenance should be performed in house or by contract vendor.
• Train staff in safety procedures and enforce fire and safety rules and regulations.
• Responsible for performance evaluations, probation reports and mandatory training for all staff under direct supervision
• Recommend the replacement of vehicles and equipment based on condition.
• Perform NYS inspections for on the road vehicles and equipment.
• Assign and track all labor performed and materials used in the AiM system.
• Maintain an up-to-date inventory of all vehicles and equipment.
• Perform a full range of supervisory duties.
• Perform other duties as assigned.
Operational Needs:
• Mandatory overtime dependent on operational needs.
• Ability to use a variety of hand tools and power tools associated with the mechanical trade.
Minimum Qualifications This title is part of the New York Hiring for Emergency Limited Placement Statewide Program (NY HELPS)* and applicants must meet the following minimum qualifications to be considered for this position:
Required Experience: One year of experience supervising staff engaged in the maintenance, overhaul, and repair of gasoline and/or diesel-powered motor equipment, including passenger vehicles, construction and heavy equipment, freight and other commercial cargo vehicles, self-propelled off-road equipment, and non-self-propelled motor equipment.
Applicants may be appointed to this position if currently reachable on the appropriate eligible list for this title OR are a current New York State employee with one year or more of qualifying permanent service as a Service & Repair Mechanic Motor Equipment and eligible for transfer under Section 70.1 of the Civil Service Law.
This title requires the possession of a valid New York State driver’s license appropriate for the type of vehicle operated.
