Duties Description This position will be located in the Office of Environment, Landscape Architecture Bureau.
Under the direction of a higher-level supervisor/manager, the duties of the Landscape Architect
Trainee/Assistant Landscape Architect may include, but are not limited to:
•Providing Landscape Architectural design and support for capital program, maintenance, and special
projects including planning, site analysis, grading, drainage, plant selection, design,
construction, preservation, restoration, and rehabilitation of transportation facilities, buildings
and institutions, parks, historic sites, recreation areas and other outdoor areas,
•Preparing renderings, visualizations, Geographic Information Systems (GIS) map analyses, technical
media and presentation materials for decision making, design development and delivery, and for use
in training, public meetings, workshops, and hearings utilizing current software tools,
•Preparing project contract documents including plans, specifications and estimates for landscape
components, erosion control plans, storm water management plans and wetland mitigation designs,
•Assisting with review, tracking, revision, and development of landscape specifications and
approved products
lists, evaluation of new products and research into sustainable materials, design, and construction
techniques,
•Assisting with the New York State Scenic Byways Program including project reviews and tracking,
corridor
management plans, and support to Byways organizations,
•Supporting Adirondack and Catskill Park Preserve interagency and stakeholder coordination
including implementation of the Master Transportation Corridor Unit Management Plan, tracking,
annual reporting, and further corridor plan development,
•Assisting in the provision of technical assistance, support, and development of guidance for
complete streets and active transportation (bicycle and pedestrian) facility design including
compliance with Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and related requirements,
•Taking part in vegetation management strategies, control of invasive species and conservation
efforts for pollinators including interactions with agency/industry/Non-Governmental Organization
(NGO)technical working groups,
•Assisting with environmental analysis related to federal, state, and local regulations and
requirements, permit
applications and the development of related policies and procedures, and
•Evaluating projects and materials prepared by consultants, local governments, and developers for
their
impact on state properties, permits and consistency with guidance.
Responsibilities may include serving a role within the Incident Command System to support the
department’s response to regional and statewide emergency situations.
Minimum Qualifications This title is part of the New York Hiring for Emergency Limited Placement Statewide Program (NY
HELPS).*
To be considered for appointment through NY HELPS, or 55 b/c, candidates must meet the
open-competitive minimum qualifications for this position. The qualifications are:
Landscape Architect Trainee:
1. A bachelor’s or higher-level degree in Landscape Architecture;
OR
2. A Landscape Architect’s license from any state or political subdivision of the United States.
As a Landscape Architect Trainee, you will serve a 24-month traineeship that leads to Assistant
Landscape Architect, Grade 20. To advance to Assistant Landscape Architect, you must have obtained
proof of passing any two sections of the LARE and successfully completed the requirements of the
traineeship to the satisfaction of the appointing authority. At the discretion of the appointing
authority, early advancement to the Assistant Landscape Architect is possible if you have obtained
any two sections of the LARE and have successfully completed twelve months of the traineeship. It
is your responsibility to notify the appointing authority’s personnel office upon obtaining proof
of passing any two sections of the LARE. Failure to obtain a passing result on any two sections of
the LARE within 24-months will result in removal from your position.
Assistant Landscape Architect:
1.A bachelor’s or higher-level degree in Landscape Architecture; and proof of passing any two
sections of the LARE;
OR
2.A Landscape Architect’s license from any state or political subdivision of the United States.
Candidates may also be qualified for permanent competitive appointment if reachable from the appropriate Civil Service eligible list or eligible for reassignment or transfer in accordance with Civil Service Law.
Additional Comments Applicants must be currently authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis. *This title is part of the New York Hiring for Emergency Limited Placement Statewide Program (NY HELPS). For the duration of the NY HELPS Program, this title may be filled via a non-competitive appointment, which means no examination is required but all candidates must meet the minimum qualifications of the title for which they apply. At a future date (within one year of permanent appointment), it is expected employees hired under NY HELPS will have their non-competitive employment status converted to competitive status, without having to compete in an examination. Employees will then be afforded with all of the same rights and privileges of competitive class employees of New York State. While serving permanently in a NY HELPS title, employees may take part in any promotion examination for which they are qualified. Your required educational credentials must have been awarded by an educational institution accredited by a regional, national, or specialized agency recognized as an accrediting agency by the United States (U.S.) Department of Education/Secretary of Education. If awarded by an institution outside of the U.S. and its territories, you must provide independent verification of equivalency. The starting salary for an Assistant Landscape Architect is $81,193. This amount is comprised of the base salary of $74,193 with an additional geographic pay differential of $7,000, specific to this title and location. The maximum compensation for this position is $101,121. This amount is comprised of the standard job rate of $94,121 with an additional geographic pay differential of $7,000, specific to this title and location. In addition, a Mid-Hudson Adjustment of $2,000 or a Downstate Adjustment of $4,000 may also apply depending on the location of the position.
