Duties Description The duties of the Assistant Director of Actuary include, but are not limited to, the following:

Manages assigned projects including managing deadlines, assigning work to the staff, checking work, and preparing some of the work personally, as needed
Facilitates the delivery of this work to the Chief Actuary and Actuarial Directors and to other departments within the System
Acts as a resource for other departments at the System including working with legal, Member Relations, audit, risk, investments and finance
Works on the annual actuarial valuation of System data, assets and liabilities leading to the development of the employer contribution rate, using the System’s valuation software (ProVal)
Works on the System’s annual actuarial gain/loss using the System’s valuation software (ProVal)
Checks annual experience studies used to gauge the effectiveness of actuarial assumptions
Works on the development of revised actuarial assumptions as needed
Checks calculations needed for compliance with GASB 67 and GASB 68
Checks fiscal notes for proposed plan design legislation affecting the System
Contributes to the preparation of the New York State Dept. of Financial Services annual filing
Coordinates the development of information, charts, and graphs for the Actuarial and Statistical section of the System’s Annual Financial Report
Works with outside auditors and system accountants on preparation of the System’s annual financial statements, including preparation of actuarial and funding disclosures
Prepares data as needed to respond to requests for information

Minimum Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in mathematics, Actuarial Science, or a related field; AND
Actuarial Certifications (one required):
Associate of the Society of Actuaries (ASA) or Fellow of the Society of Actuaries (FSA)
Enrolled Actuary (EA); AND
Relevant Experience (both required):
At least eight years of pension actuarial experience, preferably public plan experience
At least two years of experience managing staff

Additional Comments Position Summary

The Assistant Director manages projects and staff in the Office of the Actuary at New York State Teachers’ Retirement System (NYSTRS), one of the 10-largest public pension funds in the nation. The focus of the actuarial team is to maintain a secure, stable pension for the members of NYSTRS through its annual preparation of the actuarial valuation and employer contribution rate. The Assistant Director will manage projects, check work and lead difficult projects while working with a highly collaborative team. Given the size of the plan, the position allows for a wide range of actuarial opportunities and skill growth within an organization that supports a healthy work-life balance.
