Duties Description Under the direction of the Park Manager at Sterling Forest State Park, the selected candidate’s duties will include, but not be limited to:
• Park Patrol duties below to be performed in a team setting:
o Assist in ensuring patrons follow park rules and regulations and that grounds are kept clean.
o Assist with posting boundaries.
o Assist in clearing fire roads and trails.
o After a training period, participate in park patrol rounds and emergency protocols.
o Assist with search and rescue efforts via land and water; assist in monitoring lakes for seasonal boat permits and checking ice thickness for ice fishing.
• Grounds maintenance:
o Use and maintain hand tools and gas-powered equipment.
o Assist in grounds maintenance including mowing, weed whacking, and trimming hedges.
• Building maintenance:
o Assist higher-level personnel in various semi-skilled building repair tasks including but not limited to carpentry (minor wood replacement and building repairs), masonry (pouring sidewalks and pads), electrical (changing switches and light fixtures, light bulbs, and breakers), and plumbing tasks (faucet changing and bathroom winterizing).
• Visitor Center operations:
o Interact with park patrons including disseminating information and leading hikes.
o Assist office staff as needed.
• This position involves handling multiple projects while working alone as well as in a team setting.
• Adhering to the agency’s Code of Conduct Policy and ensuring compliance with all guidelines, policies, and procedures in the performance of daily tasks.
Minimum Qualifications No minimum qualifications per Civil Service.
Additional Comments OPERATIONAL NEEDS:
• Must be at least 18 years of age and possess skills in both maintenance and outdoor work.
• Must have the ability to work weekends and holidays.
• Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license that allows the candidate to legally operate a motor vehicle in New York State as a term and condition of employment.
• Must be able to perform medium to heavy physical labor and be capable of hiking 4-6 miles over foot trails.
BENEFITS:
This position has the option to join the NYS Employees’ Retirement System and may be eligible for health insurance, dental and vision coverage as well as the opportunity for paid time off in the form of vacation, sick, personal and holiday leave after time and service requirements have been met.
