The Office of the New York State Attorney General (OAG) is seeking a talented and motivated attorney for its Law Enforcement Misconduct Investigative Office (LEMIO). The Assistant Attorney General (AAG) position provides a unique and exciting opportunity to join a first-of-its-kind statewide oversight body charged with identifying and addressing law enforcement misconduct. The position is available in either the Albany or New York City office and reports to the LEMIO Bureau Chief and Deputy Bureau Chief.

LEMIO was established by Executive Law 75 in 2021 for the purpose of protecting civil liberties and civil rights, ensuring compliance with constitutional protections and local, state, and federal laws, and increasing public confidence in law enforcement. Pursuant to Executive Law 75, LEMIO can investigate allegations of misconduct, including patterns and trends, review policies and procedures of covered agencies, and make recommendations for reform and/or remedial measures, including disciplinary action. Where appropriate, LEMIO may pursue civil litigation to address persistent misconduct.

Minimum Qualifications Qualifications:
• At least three (3) years of post-graduate legal experience is required.
• Experience investigating and/or litigating issues relating to law enforcement or governmental misconduct or civil rights matters.
• Knowledge of law enforcement practices, procedures, and reforms, and civil rights law.
• Strong writing, organizational, interpersonal communication, and problem-solving skills.
• A demonstrated commitment to public service.

Applicants must reside in (or intend to soon become a resident of) New York state and be admitted to practice law in New York state. In addition, the Public Officers Law requires that OAG attorneys be citizens of the United States. A two (2) year commitment upon being hired is a condition of employment.
