Duties Description Since 1957, the Dental Clinic at Helen Hayes Hospital has continually provided a full scope of dental services to individuals with physical challenges and intellectual impairments. It serves a population of patients with special needs who are primarily referred to the program from group residential settings. The Dental Clinic is a model program for the treatment of patients who present the most challenging dental cases, as well the training of specialized dental professionals in this area. The Clinic serves approximately 1,330 dental/hygienist visits per year and provides a highly specialized service to meet the needs of it's patients who, due to medical conditions, typically have special needs when it comes to dental care.

The Dentist 1, Grade 30, will provide the full range of professional dental services, including: Examinations of individuals teeth and surrounding oral structures utilizing x-rays, mouth mirrors, and other diagnostic procedures and instruments to determine pathological or irregular conditions; Treats dental diseases, injuries and malfunctions of teeth and gums; Performs restoration of simple and compound cavities; Performs single and multiple extractions of teeth; Cleans and treats teeth, mouth, and gum infections with appropriate drugs or by surgery; Maintains written records of individuals’ dental treatments; and advises individuals about dental health practices.

Minimum Qualifications Open Competitive NYS HELPS Qualifications - Possession of a license and current registration to practice dentistry in New York State.

Current New York State employees - One or more years of permanent, contingent-permanent, or 55 b/c service in a position that is eligible for transfer under Section 70.1 of the Civil Service Law to a Dentist 1.


Preferred Qualifications: The preferred candidate will have two to three years of experience providing dental care to patients with physical and developmental disabilities.

Posted salary range includes an increased minimum of $27,544, plus an additional geographic pay differential of $35,000 and downstate adjustment of $4,000.
