Duties Description Peebles Island State park is a 190-acre state park located at the confluence of the Mohawk and Hudson rivers, situated between Cohoes, Waterford, and Troy. In addition to encompassing the entirety of Peebles Island, the park also includes the Matton Shipyard on neighboring Van Schaick Island. The park includes hiking trails, picnic areas, a pavilion and visitor’s center. Headquarters for New York State’s Bureau of Historic Sites as well as the Division for Historic Preservation are located within the park.
Under the direction of the Park Supervisor, the candidate will be involved in many aspects of facility maintenance including building and grounds maintenance. The candidate will be committed to providing good customer service to patrons by answering questions and addressing their concerns promptly and courteously. Duties include but are not limited to:
• Clean grounds, roadways, and structures by sweeping, raking, shoveling, weed whacking, mowing, and removing by hand debris, leaves, branches, snow, ice, or trash.
• Perform maintenance activities, including the below:
o Unclog toilets and sinks; replace faucets and washers.
o Assist in the repairing of roads, paths, benches, trails, picnic shelters, and various equipment.
o Assist skilled or semi-skilled trades positions by performing a variety of relatively unskilled tasks.
• Clean restrooms and buildings; pick up litter.
• Perform interior and exterior painting tasks.
• Perform minor repairs to a variety of structures and buildings.
• Clear sites, preparing them for planting, and plants seeds, trees, shrubbery, and flowers.
• Use and maintain tools and equipment properly.
• Utilize proper Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) during work tasks.
• This position involves physically demanding work outdoors on uneven and steep terrain in a variety of weather conditions for extended periods of time. This includes carrying and moving tools, materials, and equipment weighing 50 pounds or more.
• Read and understand written instructions and material.
• Coordinate with other site staff during special events and in emergency situations to ensure that guests have an enjoyable and safe experience.
• Adhere to the agency’s Code of Conduct Policy and ensure compliance with all guidelines, policies, and procedures in the performance of daily tasks.
Minimum Qualifications No minimum qualifications per Civil Service.
Additional Comments Work shift will vary as necessary to accommodate park programing and events but will commonly be Sunday – Thursday 7:00am to 3:30 pm.
OPERATIONAL NEEDS:
• Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions.
• Must be able to perform medium to heavy physical labor.
• Must possess and maintain a valid NYS driver’s license as a term and condition of employment.
• Must be capable of operating and performing routine maintenance on a variety of power-driven mechanical equipment including mowers, line trimmers, chainsaws, Utility Task Vehicle (UTV’s), leaf vacuum and generators.
• Must keep up on all mandated safety training including First Aid/CPR/AED.
• Will be required to work weekends and holidays as needed.
• Must be capable of basic computer operation.
