 Duties Description Under the direction of higher-level Research Scientist, the Assistant Research Scientist or Research Scientist 1 will work in the Newborn Screening Program’s Tandem Mass Spectrometry (MS/MS) laboratory. The incumbent’s primary task will be focused on learning sample processing and testing for the primary screening tests within the MS/MS laboratories. The incumbent will also learn the sample evaluation and sample handling processes as well as the screening tests for galactosemia and Biotinidase.   
 
 Minimum Qualifications Assistant Research Scientist (G14):  Bachelor’s or higher degree in the natural sciences and one year of professional research experience* in an appropriate field.   
*Substitution: 30 graduate hours leading to an advanced degree in an appropriate field may be substituted for the required experience. 
Research Scientist 1 (G18): Bachelor’s degree in the natural sciences and two years of professional research experience** in an appropriate field.  
**Substitutions: A master’s degree in an appropriate field may substitute for one year of experience, and a doctorate in an appropriate field may substitute for an additional year of experience.  
Preferred Qualifications: Knowledge of biochemistry and genetics. Mass Spec or other analytical testing experience. Strong skills with excel. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. 
 
 Additional Comments This position will require the incumbent meet all Federal requirements for staff who perform clinical testing, including the educational requirements. Dependent upon the initial assignment or subsequent reassignment of this position satisfactory background checks may be required. Permanent, non-competitive, fulltime. Since exposure to potentially hazardous substances may be involved with this position, the selected candidate will be required to wear personal protective clothing and equipment. Work hours may be variable. Some travel may be required.
This position may require travel throughout New York State including overnights to areas not served by public transportation.
