Duties Description Position to be based at the Oneida Lake Hatchery in Constantia. This position will run through March 31, 2026.

This position will be working on the Oneida Lake angler survey in conjunction with the Cornell University Biological Field Station (CBFS) staff. Job duties will include conducting a shore access and winter ice fishing angler survey.

The Oneida Lake Angler Survey will monitor angler catch rates and preferences. Interviews will take place 4 days per week; 2 randomly-selected weekdays and both weekend days depending on weather and ice conditions (all holidays except Christmas are survey days assuming favorable conditions). Interviews will be obtained at access points and when safe to do so walking on the ice interviewing anglers. On interview days, the tech will start by assessing lake/ice conditions for safety with guidance from CBFS personnel. If conditions are favorable, the tech will conduct interviews for 6 hours during a morning (8 AM to 2 PM) or afternoon (2 PM to 8 PM) time slot, with 1 hour before and 1 hour after for travel time and equipment preparation. The fifth day of the work week will be spent assisting DEC or CBFS staff on various fisheries projects. This day will be chosen by the tech each week to offer flexibility for their days off. Holidays are considered weekend days and are treated as such when designing the survey; a holiday during the week will result in a weekend day off for the tech that week.

Technicians must effectively interact and communicate with the public, ask questions regarding their angling experience, and accurately record their answers and biological data on fish caught. Processing fish for length, weight, and scale samples as available is required.

These positions require that the Technician to work in a variety of inclement weather condition. Must work effectively both independently and as a team member. Other duties will include, but not limited to, equipment maintenance, data entry and other computer tasks.

Minimum Qualifications 30 semester credit hours, including 12 semester credit hours in fisheries, marine resources or wildlife management; mariculture; marine biology; aquaculture; aquatic, marine or terrestrial ecology; zoology; marine technology; botany; limnology; hydrology; or oceanography.

Additional Comments This is a seasonal, hourly appointment with an anticipated end date of 3/31/2026. Program needs and funding will determine actual termination date.

Actual work schedule, duties and travel requirements may vary and will be discussed at the interview.
