Duties Description Maintenance Assistants, as semiskilled employees, perform the more routine, repetitive maintenance, installation, and repair tasks in one or a combination of the mechanical, building construction, motor equipment, and electrical trades. Incumbents may also perform journey-level activities, under supervision, or after receiving detailed instructions, to learn and perfect their skills.This position will include the setting up of appointments with campus constituents who are requesting assistance in a variety of trades. The coordination of these work orders will include effective and professional communication with those who requested or need the work to be completed; including appropriate updates on the status of the work throughout the process. While the work orders will be in the general maintenance field, specific areas may include, but are not limited to, assisting in painting and decorating work by performing interior and exterior painting not requiring fine finish or decorative treatment; staining and finishing wood and furniture; painting equipment; installing wallpaper; and spray-painting surfaces and equipment. When deemed necessary by a supervisor, Maintenance Assistants may be assigned to other maintenance activities, such as snow and ice control. They may also occasionally operate trucks and light construction equipment. The use of appropriate PPE, selecting and safely using the appropriate tools and equipment needed to complete the assigned tasks, and attending job related training will be required. Minimum Qualifications -Must be eligible for permanent appointment to this title pursuant to civil service law.
-Two years of full-time experience in maintenance or mechanical work under the supervision of a skilled tradesperson; OR completion of an appropriate two year technical school course at a school, institute, or branch of the Armed Services, such as the New York State Civil Service Employees Association-Partnership (NYS CSEA-P) Applied Skilled Trades Certificate Program*; OR an equivalent combination of experience and training gained by completion of appropriate technical courses at a school, institute, or branch of the Armed Services.
-A demonstrated ability to work effectively and collegially with a variety of individuals.
-When required to operate motor vehicles, candidates must possess a valid New York State driver’s license appropriate for the type of vehicle to be operated.
*Successful completion of the NYS CSEA-P Applied Skilled Trades Certificate Program includes a total of 288 hours of trade-specific classroom instruction, 45 hours of technical math course work, 45 hours of technical communications course work, and 15 hours of blueprint/schematic reading course work. It does not include 4,000 hours of on-the-job training, as required for the NYS CSEA-P Applied Skilled Trades Traineeship.

Maintenance & Operations is responsible for processing all work order requests received, and handling them accurately and timely. We are part of the Administration & Finance division which provides essential services to our campus, local, state, federal and international customers. We are responsible for human, physical, financial and technical resources. As professionals, we navigate systems in a collaborative and sensitive way to assist the University in achieving its educational mission. The shift for this position is expected to be Monday – Friday, 7:00am – 3:30pm. This temporary position for the winter is expected to begin in mid-December and end in late January.
