Duties Description Description:
The New York State Insurance Fund (NYSIF), with over $20 billion in assets under management, is hiring a Sustainable Investments Manager to support the implementation of its sustainable investing strategy. This is a high-impact role for an experienced investment professional who thrives at the intersection of financial analysis and sustainability.

The Manager will lead investment diligence and portfolio analysis related to sustainability across asset classes, including public and private markets—while managing climate-related data and helping shape NYSIF’s growing sustainable investment portfolio. This position is ideal for someone with strong analytical skills, deep familiarity with sustainability data and frameworks, management experience, and a passion for aligning investment outcomes with environmental and social goals.


Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Sourcing and Due Diligence
• Lead sourcing and diligence of sustainable investment opportunities across asset classes—including public equities, fixed income, private equity, credit, real assets, and structured products—with a focus on Sustainability-integrated, climate-aligned, and impact-oriented strategies.
• Leverage existing relationships and proactively expand NYSIF’s network of sustainability-focused fund managers and platforms.
• Conduct rigorous due diligence of investment opportunities, including both financial and Sustainability considerations and assess alignment with NYSIF’s sustainability objectives and risk-return profile.
• Responsible for leading due diligence on Sustainability oriented private funds, including, for example – decarbonization, renewable energy, and affordable housing funds.
• Prepare comprehensive investment memos and presentations and support review and approval processes through internal investment committees.

Portfolio Oversight and Benchmarking
• Support the construction and ongoing monitoring of NYSIF’s sustainable investment portfolio, including performance attribution, risk assessment, and ESG/impact tracking.
• Evaluate and benchmark ESG and climate performance at both the individual investment and total portfolio levels.
• Track implementation of sustainability-related goals, including net zero alignment, climate risk mitigation, and social impact contributions.

Data Management and Reporting
• Manage ESG and climate-related data collection, analysis, and reporting across all asset classes.
• Analyze metrics such as carbon emissions (Scope 1, 2, and 3), net zero targets, science-based commitments, physical and transition risk exposure, and alignment with industry standards (e.g., TCFD, SBTi, CDP, PCAF).
• Utilize ESG and climate platforms (e.g., MSCI, Aladdin Climate, Sustainalytics, Bloomberg, ISS) to monitor portfolio exposure and performance.
• Co-author reports, including climate disclosures, investment case studies, and thematic analyses.

Stakeholder Engagement and Policy Support
• Collaborate with internal teams (investment staff, legal, risk, operations) and external stakeholders (consultants, fund managers, regulators) to implement NYSIF’s ESG priorities.
• Support development of ESG-related investment frameworks, policies, and evaluation tools.
• Prepare materials and briefings for senior leadership, the Board, and external partners.

Minimum Qualifications Minimum Qualifications:
• Bachelor’s degree in finance, economics, sustainability, or a related field.
• Minimum of seven years of experience in investment management, sustainable investing, or ESG research, with a demonstrated track record of fund sourcing, evaluation, and portfolio oversight.
• Experience evaluating financial and sustainability aspects of private markets funds.
• Strong analytical and modeling capabilities with experience integrating ESG and financial data.
• Proficiency with some ESG data platforms and tools (e.g., MSCI, Bloomberg, Aladdin, ISS, Sustainalytics).
• Familiarity with leading sustainability frameworks and disclosure standards (e.g., TCFD, PRI, CDP, GHG Protocol, SFDR, SBTi).


Preferred Qualifications:
• MBA, CFA, CAIA, or progress toward a similar credential.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including experience preparing investment memos and ESG reporting.
• Deep understanding of sustainable finance market trends and ESG regulatory developments.
• Proven ability to work independently and collaboratively within cross-functional teams.
