Duties Description Under the supervision of higher-level personnel, the Trades Generalist will be responsible for a primary trade of heavy equipment operation. Trades Generalists across the various trades have one responsibility in common and that is performing a variety of skilled and semiskilled maintenance, repair, installation, and construction tasks in the mechanical, building, motor equipment and electrical trades.

The Trades Generalist operates, rigs, lubricates, and makes running repairs to self-propelled equipment in excavating, driving, or extracting piling, lifting, and moving heavy machinery or materials, grading and other construction and maintenance operations.
• Operate various types of heavy equipment in routine and emergency maintenance operations for park needs. The equipment operated includes, but is not limited to, mobile cranes, power shovels, gradalls, tracked dozers, wheeled loaders, skid steer loaders, forklifts, tractors w/surf rakes, Broyhill refuse packers, street sweepers, bucket trucks, front-loading refuse trucks, and truck w/trailer combos for transporting equipment.
• Grade areas for public safety using bulldozers, bucket loaders and other equipment
• Remove refuse on ocean front beach using heavy equipment in a safe and timely manner
• Check fluid levels, tire pressure, safety devices, control mechanisms, friction adjustments prior to operation, and monitor gauges and fluid levels of machine during operation
• Start, stop, steer and control machine and its attachments in safe effective and efficient manner to perform assigned tasks
• Maintain daily record of work performed and materials used and perform routine maintenance and repairs on machines to ensure safe and efficient operation; clean, oil, and lubricate equipment as necessary; change tires on machines as needed; make minor repairs in the field to keep machine running for the day
• Pump gas or other fuel, add or drain water and/or antifreeze to radiator, oil to crankcase, hydraulic fluid to reservoirs, and air to tires
• Perform welding repairs on cars, trucks and heavy equipment using arc welding, oxyacetylene and brazing; fabricates with arc welder; uses cutting wheel and grinder;
• Transport materials and equipment throughout the state; May be required to load and unload materials, tools, and equipment of varying weights and sizes
• Supervise subordinate staff in daily operations in the absence of a higher-level supervisor
• Perform other related duties as required

Minimum Qualifications Four years of full-time experience in a trade under a skilled tradesperson which would provide training equivalent to that given in a training, apprenticeship, or equivalent program; or an equivalent combination of experience and training gained by completion of technical courses in skilled trades at a school, institute, or branch of the Armed Services.

When required to operate motor vehicles, candidates must possess a valid New York State driver's license appropriate for the type of vehicle to be operated.

Reassignment Qualifications:
Current NYS Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation Employees only, with at least one year of permanent or contingent-permanent qualifying service as a Trades Generalist.

Additional Comments OPERATIONAL NEEDS:
• Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license that allows the candidate to legally operate a motor vehicle in New York State as a term and condition of employment.
• Ability to utilize and train subordinate staff in the use of various trades-associated tools and testing equipment.
• Ability to supervise skilled, semi-skilled and unskilled work crews.
• Ability to lift, carry and move equipment and/or materials of different weights and sizes.

Positions located within Suffolk County are also eligible to receive an additional $4,000 annual downstate adjustment.

The listed hiring rate combines the statutory hiring rate for CSEA Grade 12 ($54,425) with Location Pay ($4,000). Similarly, the posted job rate is a combination of the statutory job rate ($65,548) with the Location Pay ($4,000).
