Duties Description The New York State Office of Cannabis Management (OCM) Communications Department is seeking a highly creative and experienced candidate who thrives in a collaborative, fast-paced team environment and is passionate about telling impactful visual stories that inspire and inform. As a key member of the OCM communications team, you will produce, shoot, and edit human-centered videos that bring to life the mission of the agency—highlighting the people, communities, and stories that define New York’s cannabis industry. We’re a close-knit group of creatives who believe in teamwork, storytelling, and using our skills to make a positive impact across New York State.
Duties include but are not limited to:
• Film, edit, and produce videos that communicate key messages, initiatives, and events to the public.
• Plan and execute the digital media campaign for the Office of Cannabis Management.
• Collaborate closely with the Subject Matter Experts to enhance storytelling and visual consistency across OCM campaigns.
• Conceptualize, storyboard, and execute a wide range of video projects—including stakeholder stories, educational explainers, social media reels, press event recaps, and promotional videos.
• Capture both photography and videography across a variety of indoor and outdoor settings, sometimes with limited setup time.
• Conduct on-camera interviews with agency staff, licensees, subject matter experts, and community members.
• Create motion graphics and animated text elements to elevate the visual storytelling of video content.
• Support video and photo needs for social media, website, press events, OCM intranet, internal trainings, and ongoing campaigns.
• Organize, manage, and maintain a well-labeled digital archive of raw footage and edited assets using best practices for file management.
Minimum Qualifications Six years* of experience in public relations, social media, and digital communications.
*Substitutions: A degree in Communications, English, Public Relations, Social Media, Digital Communications, or similar field may substitute for the below years of experience:
• Associate’s degree: two years
• Bachelor’s degree: four years
• Master’s degree: five years
Preferred Qualifications:
• Strong understanding of videography and photography techniques and equipment, with the ability to capture footage in a variety of settings and environments.
• Exceptional creative eye for storytelling, composition, and visual impact.
• Excellent communication and organizational skills; able to collaborate effectively and meet deadlines.
• Experience creating motion graphics for videos is a plus.
NOTE: IN ORDER TO AWARD THE PROPER CREDIT FOR WORK EXPERIENCE, RESUMES MUST INCLUDE MONTH AND YEAR FOR START AND END DATES. IF ANY OF THIS EXPERIENCE IS LESS THAN FULL TIME YOU MUST INDICATE THE AVERAGE NUMBER OF HOURS WORKED PER WEEK.
Additional Comments Notes:
• Travel may be required (approximately 50%), including during evening and weekends, depending on mission and assignment.
• Possession and maintenance of a valid Driver’s License issued by the NYS Department of Motor Vehicle is required, or otherwise demonstrate the capacity to meet the transportation needs of the job.
