Duties Description Duties include, but are not limited to:
Grounds and Landscaping:
• Maintain lawns, trees, and shrubs through regular mowing, trimming, and weeding.
• Ensure cemetery grounds are visually appealing and well-kept.
• Conduct seasonal plantings and care for floral arrangements.
• Perform irrigation and fertilization to promote healthy landscapes.
• Supervise seasonal employees working on grounds maintenance.
• Snow removal.
General Maintenance:
• Maintain cemetery infrastructure, including walkways, roads, and fencing.
• Assist with cleaning and upkeep of memorials, headstones, and signage.
• Remove debris, fallen branches, and other obstructions from cemetery grounds.
• Perform winter maintenance, including snow and ice removal.
Interment Assistance:
• Serve as a backup for burial operations as needed.
• Assist in the preparation and closing of burial sites.
• Operate cemetery equipment to support interment services.
Minimum Qualifications One year of service as a Facility Operations Assistant 1 or Motor Vehicle Operator;
OR
Two years of full-time, verifiable experience in custodial, grounds, or maintenance operation or assisting in a journey-level trade.
Note:
When required to operate a motor vehicle, applicants must possess a valid New York State driver’s license appropriate for the type of vehicle to be operated.

Acceptable proof:
Experience: A letter on letterhead from your employer that includes the names and titles of supervisors, the duties performed during the training period and specific dates of employment.?
OR
Appropriate course work: A copy of their transcript or listing of course work completed.?
OR
A copy of a trade’s union card.
Per Agreement between the Civil Service Employees Association, Inc. and the State of New York, Article 45 (d) the requirement to prove qualification shall rest with the employee. Candidates who do not submit appropriate documentary proof that they meet the minimum qualifications will not be considered for appointment.??
Preferred Qualifications:
• Experience in groundskeeping landscaping, or a related field.
• Ability to operate lawn care and landscaping/burial equipment.
• Willingness to assist with interment duties when required.
• May be exposed to all types of weather conditions for long periods of time including extreme heat and cold, wind, rain, snow, ice, etc., when performing duties.
• Commitment to maintaining a respectful and dignified environment for veterans and their families.
• Possess or willing to obtain and possess the appropriate license, or certification to apply pesticides, herbicides and other treatments.
NOTE: IN ORDER TO AWARD THE PROPER CREDIT FOR WORK EXPERIENCE, RESUMES MUST INCLUDE MONTH AND YEAR FOR START AND END DATES. IF ANY OF THIS EXPERIENCE IS LESS THAN FULL TIME YOU MUST INDICATE THE AVERAGE NUMBER OF HOURS WORKED PER WEEK.
Additional Comments Operational Needs:
• Selected candidate must be willing to attend National Cemetery Administration training for cemetery staff.
• Travel is required (approximately 30%), including evening and weekends, depending on mission and assignment.
• Possession and maintenance of a valid, unrestricted New York State motor vehicle operator’s license.
