Duties Description The research scientist will be part of the Bureau of Surveillance and Data Systems (BSDS) Electronic Syndromic Surveillance System (ESSS) team. The incumbant will collaborate in the development of research and academic manuscripts and publications on opioids and drug overdose using near-real-time syndromic data. It will include coordinating the Division of Epidemiology BSDS’s syndromic surveillance efforts on opioids and drug overdose surveillance. The position will assist with the development of tableau dashboard metrics to share with the state programs, Emergency Departments (ED), and Local Health Departments (LHD) for near-real-time surveillance. Duties will also include staff supervision and other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications A bachelor’s degree in Epidemiology, Statistics/Biostatistics, Public Health, Biology, Biomedical Science, Engineering, Environmental Health, Environmental Science, Infection Control, Mathematics or a closely related degree field AND four (4)** years of full-time, professional scientific research experience in an appropriate field .
**Substitutions: master’s degree in Epidemiology, Statistics/Biostatistics, Public Health, Biology, Biomedical Science, Engineering, Environmental Health, Environmental Science, Infection Control, Mathematics or a closely related degree field may substitute for one year of experience, and Doctorate or Ph.D. in Epidemiology, Statistics/Biostatistics, Public Health, Biology, Biomedical Science, Engineering, Environmental Health, Environmental Science, Infection Control, Mathematics or a closely related degree field may substitute for an additional year of experience.
In addition to meeting the above minimum qualifications, below are the Preferred Qualifications:
Preferred requirements include experience working with large statewide administrative relational databases and fluency in SAS, SQL, or related statistical software. Experience with the syndromic data system, public health experience, disease coding schemes such as ICD-10 codes, knowledge of medical file transfer HL7, ability to effectively work independently as well as part of a team, experience with statistical analysis methodologies, publications, and presentations would be preferred.
Additional Comments This position may require travel throughout New York State including overnights to areas not served by public transportation.
