Duties Description PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Under the direction of the Maintenance Supervisor 1 (Motor Equipment), the Service & Repair Mechanic (Motor Equipment), will be assigned to the following:
• Shall diagnose and perform major and minor mechanical, electrical and hydraulic repairs on self-propelled and non-self-propelled vehicles and equipment
• Maintain gasoline and diesel engines replacing or repairing parts such as valves, bearings, gears, shafts, pistons, rings, oil, fuel and water pumps, radiators, and carburetors, including fitting main and connecting rod bearings and install wrist pins
• Perform body and fender work including the restoration, scraping, and spray painting of metal surfaces
• Install new motors
• Repair and service conventional and automatic transmissions including clutch assemblies, differentials, transfer cases, torque converters and gear trains
• Repair, maintain, and adjust automotive electrical systems including components such as ignitions, switches, generators, voltage regulators, alternators, and starting motors
• Perform preventive maintenance and safety inspections of vehicles and equipment
• Provide oversight to the Assistant Mechanic assigned to the Jiffy Lube program and cover program in the absence of the Assistant Mechanic.
• Order, receive, and inventory supplies and parts for vehicle maintenance and repair
• Operate testing equipment, hand, and power tools, in the diagnosis and repair of electronic engine control systems
• Will be assigned a procurement card and make purchases according to guidelines for needed items in transportation
• Will work in the AMS program to track vehicles in the fleet
• Required to perform snow removal on roadways and parking lots as necessary during winter months, working with “On Call” schedule
• Will be required to have a NYS Vehicle Inspection License
• Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications Non-competitive:
Four years of experience as an automotive or diesel mechanic responsible for the diagnosis of faulty vehicle and/or equipment operation and the performance of mechanical repairs covering several aspects of automotive and/or diesel systems OR an associate's degree in automotive or diesel repair technology.

Substitution: Education as detailed below may be substituted for a maximum of two years of experience.

Graduation from a technical or vocational program, such as B.O.C.E.S, in automotive or diesel technology or automotive or diesel repair technology may be substituted for one year of experience.

Graduation from a one-year post high school certificate program in automotive or diesel repair technology may be substituted for up to two years of experience.

When required to operate motor vehicles, candidates must possess a valid New York State driver's license appropriate for the type of vehicle to be operated.

Transfer:
Candidates must have one year of permanent competitive or 55-b/c status in the posted title and be eligible for lateral transfer; OR be eligible to transfer via Section 70.1, 70.4, or 52.6 of Civil Service Law. The transfer cannot be a second consecutive transfer resulting in an advancement of more than two salary grades.
