Duties Description Under the direction of the Historic Site Manager, the Interpretive Programs Assistant will be responsible for range of tasks including but not limited to:

Office Duties:
• Enter payroll, attendance and revenue, make bank deposits, complete payment of invoices and reconcile purchasing cards.
• Serve as the site’s sustainability representative.
• Maintain internal controls.
• Complete required daily, weekly and monthly paperwork.
• Assist in all site operations including organizing and cleaning office areas; ensuring public and office areas are safe and welcoming to visitors and staff.

Supervisory Duties:
• Assist in hiring, training, supervising, and evaluating seasonal interpretive staff, as well as permanent staff members who are subordinates to the IPA (generally the historic site assistant and grounds staff).
• Administer training including, but not limited to, required agency training, museum education training, customer service training, training in NYS operations and policy, site operations, museum standards and historic preservation, and historical interpretation.
• Coordinate employee scheduling in accordance with the site’s T&S budget which the IPA assists in developing.
• Serve as the volunteer coordinator by recruiting, training, scheduling, supervising and recognizing their work.

Collections Duties:
• Monitor and care for objects in exhibits, storage and period rooms.
• Keep records both digitally and analog (hard copy) files.
• Monitor environmental conditions for collections.
• Communicate with Peebles Island regarding unstable conditions, changes in collections condition, acquisitions, and collections research.
• Assist in keeping E Climate data up-to-date or PI review.
Programmatic Duties:
• Conduct research to support programming and develop programs for the public.
• Communicate with reenactors, lecturers, demonstrators and partners to develop presentations.
• Attend regular meetings both onsite and at partner venues to develop annual programs calendar.
• Supervise all programs delivered by Schuyler Mansion.
• Work in concert with Crailo staff to connect the two sites programmatically.
• Develop and coordinate programs in conjunction with special exhibitions on site and at other partner sites.

Community Outreach Duties:
• Work with the Friends of Schuyler Mansion trustees and members by serving on committees, where practical. When needed, fill in for the historic site manager at meetings. These meetings are not always held during normal working hours.
• Actively seek partnerships with community organizations: heritage, educational, cultural and natural history organizations, and other groups, where practical. The IPA will serve on community partnership committees and attend local meetings.
• Work with the Agency’s Public Affairs division to write press releases, blog posts, social media posts, and publicize events.
• Promote the site and its programs in community calendars, through partner outlets, local libraries, digital papers, calendars, bulletin boards, and social media.

NY HELPS or 55-b/c Qualifications:
This title is part of the New York Hiring for Emergency Limited Placement Statewide Program (NY HELPS).*

To be considered for appointment through NY HELPS, or 55-b/c, candidates must meet the open-competitive minimum qualifications for this position. The qualifications are:

Either 1: five years of experience developing and conducting a professional program of interpretation in either a historic house; historic site; historic park; the history section of a museum; or in the interpretation section of a governmental agency having responsibility for historic house museums, historic sites, or a cultural center providing professional-level cultural or historic exhibits.

Or 2: a bachelor's degree or higher in historic preservation, museum studies, education, history, American studies, anthropology, or architectural history AND one year of experience developing and conducting a professional program of interpretation in either a historic house; historic site; historic park; the history section of a museum; or in the interpretation section of a governmental agency having responsibility for historic house museums, historic sites, or a cultural center providing professional-level cultural or historic exhibits.

Current NYS Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation Employees only, with at least one year of permanent or contingent-permanent qualifying service as an Interpretive Programs Assistant; if you have less than one year, you must be reachable on the current Interpretive Programs Assistant eligible list for this location.

70.1 Transfer Qualifications:
At least one year of permanent or contingent-permanent qualifying service as a Historic Preservation Program Analyst, SG 18. Only the title listed is eligible for transfer.

Additional Comments Preferred Qualifications:

• A master’s degree in museum education, museum studies, public history, elementary education or a related field is preferred.
• Experience as a museum educator is desired.
• Must be a good communicator and comfortable presenting in front of groups and other audiences.
• Exceptional customer service skills.
• Knowledge and application of museum education; understanding of diverse learning types and presentation techniques.
• An understanding of history interpretation and Our Whole History
• Knowledge of historic preservation including proper care and maintenance of collections for historic buildings.

Operational Needs:
• Candidate will be required to work one weekend day per week.
• Knowledge of Microsoft Office suite, graphics design software, and excel spreadsheets.
• Experience in supervising staff members.

*NY HELPS PROGRAM:

For the duration of the NY HELPS Program, this title may be filled via a permanent non-competitive appointment, which means no examination is required but all candidates must meet the minimum qualifications of the title for which they apply.

At a future date (within one year of permanent appointment), it is expected employees hired under NY HELPS will have their non-competitive employment status converted to competitive status, without having to compete in an examination. Employees will then be afforded with all of the same rights and privileges of competitive class employees of New York State. While serving permanently in a NY HELPS title, employees may take part in any promotion examination for which they are qualified.

Employees appointed via the NY HELPS program are restricted for promotional appointment until their position is covered-in to the competitive class by the New York State Civil Service Commission (CSC), or they otherwise obtain permanent competitive status.
