Duties Description The Environmental Educator 3 and Center Director for Reinstein Woods Nature Preserve & Environmental Education Center will be responsible for 1) administering environmental education operations and programs at the Reinstein Woods facility, 2) supporting regional programs and activities, and 3) supervising staff.
1.Reinstein Woods Center
•Administer Environmental Education Center program at Reinstein Woods facility, including direction and evaluation of program activities, and management of fiscal matters
•Manage Environmental Education Center facility, including grounds, fixed assets and other educational facilities and resources
•Maintain constructive relationships with neighboring landowners
2.Regional Programs and Activities
•Work with DEC Region 9 Operations maintenance staff to ensure a safe, enjoyable setting for staff, volunteers and visitors
•Promote and support environmental education in Region 9
•Maintain liaison with DEC programs in Region 9 and work cooperatively with these units to accomplish Department objectives
•Maintain constructive liaison with the local community and with the center’s citizen support group, enlisting and encouraging help to accomplish the center's objectives
3.Staff
•Supervise staff and oversee Greenthumb, and environmental education fellowship programs
Minimum Qualifications This title is part of the New York Hiring for Emergency Limited Placement Statewide Program (NY HELPS).
For the duration of the NY HELPS Program, this title may be filled via a non-competitive appointment, which means no examination is required but all candidates must meet the minimum qualifications of the title for which they apply.
To be eligible for appointment under NY HELPS, candidates must meet the minimum qualifications below:
Non-Competitive qualifications
four years of experience in environmental conservation in a professional or technical capacity or professional teaching of environmental education AND three years of experience teaching about or interpreting the natural world.
Substitution: Bachelor's degree in biology, ecology, environmental education, environmental interpretation, environmental science, natural history, natural sciences, or a closely related field may substitute for four years of the general experience
Competitive qualifications
Reassignment - Currently in the title and an employee of DEC
or
Reinstatement Eligible - Previously held the title on a permanent competitive basis or held a title as indicated under the transfer eligible section on a permanent competitive basis.
or
Transfer Eligible - One year of permanent competitive service at Salary Grade 21 or higher and
Eligible for transfer under Section 70.1: Permanent competitive service as a Public Participation Specialist 2 or 3.
55-b/55-c Candidates must meet the open competitive minimum qualifications below and include with their resume or application, a copy of the letter from Civil Service which indicates approval for the 55-b/55-c program.
Open competitive minimum qualifications (provided for 55b/c candidates): Open Competitive: four years of experience in environmental conservation in a professional or technical capacity or professional teaching of environmental education AND three years of experience teaching about or interpreting the natural world.

Additional Comments Must have a valid driver’s license or demonstrate the ability to meet the transportation needs of the position.

For new State employees appointed to graded positions, the annual salary is the hiring rate (beginning of the Salary Range) of the position. Promotion salaries are calculated by the NYS Office of the State Comptroller in accordance with NYS Civil Service Law, OSC Payroll rules and regulations and negotiated union contracts.
