Duties Description SUNY Old Westbury invites applications for up to four openings for the position of Academic Advisor. The Academic Advisor plays a critical role in promoting student success by providing comprehensive academic advising, supporting degree progression, and connecting students with campus resources. The advisor works collaboratively with faculty, staff, and administrators to ensure students achieve their academic and professional goals.

The ideal candidate is passionate about student development and brings experience working with underrepresented, first-generation, and non-traditional student populations.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

Provide holistic academic advising to upper-level undergraduate students, including course selection, degree planning, and academic policy interpretation
Monitor student progress toward degree completion and assist with academic success strategies
Support students in understanding general education, major, and graduation requirements
Conduct individual advising appointments and group workshops, and participate in orientation sessions
Identify at-risk students and proactively connect them with appropriate campus resources
Maintain accurate advising records using institutional systems
Collaborate with faculty and campus offices to enhance student retention and persistence
Participate in relevant campus events as needed
Supervise student workers
Provide support for career and personal development, and
Maintain a flexible work schedule to accommodate evening and occasional weekend commitments.

Minimum Qualifications Required Qualifications:

Master's degree from an accredited institution.
Demonstrated 2-3 years of experience in academic advising, student services, higher education, or related field.
Knowledge of best practices in advising.
Strong interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills.
Ability to work effectively with a diverse student population.
Proficiency with student information systems and standard office technology.

Preferred Qualifications:

Master's degree in Higher Education, Counseling, Student Affairs, or related field.
Experience working at a public higher education institution.
Familiarity with SUNY policies and degree auditing systems.
Experience supporting first-generation, transfer, or underrepresented students.
