Duties Description Under the supervision of the Educational Opportunity Program (EOP) Director, the EOP Academic Counselor is responsible for all assignments and/or projects related to the counseling of Educational Opportunity Program students as assigned by the Director. This position maintains a counseling relationship with program students by providing individual and group counseling sessions relating to academic, financial, career and personal counseling matters; submits periodic and semester counseling reports, records and data as required by the Director and the NY State Education Department; participates in the EOP orientation program; and maintains applicable office hours for EOP students. The incumbent works with students in the Pre-freshman Summer Program; provides support to the EOP admissions process; maintains logs of daily counseling activities; pays special attention to retention concerns; and monitors filing of financial aid applications. He/she serves on EOP standing committees and participates in other campus/community activities that involve EOP students or that can benefit the EOP.

The EOP Academic Counselor maintains channels of communication with and makes referrals to all on-campus offices and community services which impact the Educational Opportunity Program and its students, e.g., Financial Aid Office, Bursar's Office, Social Services, Career Development Center and Student Health Center and/or Counseling Center.

The counselor is responsible for the following:

Provide academic and financial aid advising for new and continuing EOP students.
Provide individual and/or group counseling sessions to help students maximize their academic, social, emotional, and educational development.
Recommend and refer students to appropriate campus resources, support services, and/or designated outside agencies, in accordance with the policies of the Educational Opportunity Program and the College.
Assess student needs and provide appropriate intervention(s).
Partner and collaborate with college mental health practitioners in those instances where assistance is required in diagnosing and counseling a student.
Assist in the development, coordination, implementation, and evaluation of the EOP Pre-freshman Summer Program.
Participate in programmatic assessment and make recommendations for changes.
Serve on College committees that will enhance the development, effectiveness, and cooperation of the EOP Program and other areas.

Minimum Qualifications Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree (foreign equivalent or higher).
Four (4) years of full-time experience in advising, counseling, preferably in higher education or other academic related experience, and/or in a social service environment with diverse populations.
Demonstrated ability to interact and experience working with cultural and ethnically diverse student populations.
Demonstrated organizational skills and proven ability to successfully manage multiple priorities.
Effective written and oral communication skills.
Understanding of student development theory.
Demonstrated proficiency with computer applications including database management, presentation, spreadsheet, and word processing software.

Preferred Qualifications:

A Master's degree (foreign equivalent or higher) preferably in the areas of Higher Education, Student Personnel, Counseling, Academic Advising, Social Work or other related careers.
Two (2) to three (3) years of experience with diverse populations in a higher education environment with opportunity programs or related programs, (e.g., EOP/HEOP, SEEK).
Experience in student programming, developing, coordinating, conducting workshops, events and/or programs.
Experience with use of technology and experience with Microsoft Suite, Banner, Slate, and/or other student management software.
Proficiency or fluency in Spanish.
Background in academic advising and counseling for a diverse student population will be given priority.
