Duties Description The Research Scientist III will be responsible for developing technical information in the emerging area of critical loads, a concept applied to address the management of ecosystems through the mitigation of deposition of air pollutants. Given the nature of the pollutants, the incumbent will coordinate this effort at both an intra- and inter-Division level as well as on an inter-state basis in the development of policies and procedures. As part of this effort the incumbent will be working on the state of the science air quality modeling systems and data analysis, and where necessary would work on monitoring programs and data assessment. The incumbent will be working in coordination with other Research Scientists in the Section under the supervision of the Section Chief on the following multi-disciplinary tasks:
Undertake innovative data assessment and analysis of ambient air quality data measurements.
Using grid-based photochemical modeling systems, investigate control strategies for the improvement in ambient air quality for criteria and non-criteria pollutants.
Prepare technical reports and manuscripts on research findings for peer-reviewed Journals, and actively participate in professional workshops and conferences.
Provide technical support and interact with other Divisions on addressing emissions and air quality changes that may have impacts on ecosystem water quality and forests.
Provide technical support and prepare comments on federal regulatory proposals, and other planning activities towards meeting and maintaining ambient air quality standards.
Participate in inter-state and EPA meetings and conference calls as needed to represent Division views and policies related to air quality modeling and management.
