Duties Description The New York State Education Department’s (NYSED) Office of Cultural Education (OCE) is seeking candidates for a Museum Scientist 3 (Curator of Bioarcheology) position in the New York State Museum. Under the supervision of a Museum Scientist 4 or higher, the incumbent will serve as the Curator of Bioarcheology for the Anthropology Department. Duties of this position include, but are not limited to, the following:
• Provide osteological expertise in compliance with the NYS Unmarked Burial Site Protection Act including identification, fieldwork, analysis, and report preparation;
• Participate in the State Museum’s compliance with the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act and complete the repatriation of Native American human remains and funerary objects;
• Curates the Museum's human osteology collection and periodically updates policies and procedures for the ethical care, treatment, and study of human remains;
• Conducts independent research on the bioarchaeology of past populations in New York;
• Upon request, assist NYS law enforcement in the identification of human remains;
• May supervise lower-level Museum Scientists, collections technicians, interns, volunteers, and students in curatorial and collections management tasks;
• Prepares research findings for professional conferences, public and educational programming, and for publication as peer-reviewed journal articles, book chapters, monographs, and/or books.
• Seeks and oversees development of competitive grants and other outside funding to support research, curatorial, and educational programs in bioarchaeology;
• Participates in developing public and educational programs that meet the Museum's internal and community-oriented goals, including the Anthropology Workshop for K-12 teachers and administrators, and may lead their implementation;
• Develop and deliver public programs to the Museum's diverse audiences, as assigned, that may relate to current exhibitions or ongoing research. These may include gallery talks, public lectures, guided tours, or hands-on activities, with a focus on engaging family-based audiences, such as the Rock & Fossil Fun Fair, Women of Science Program, various Teacher’s Workshops, and other programs run in collaboration with the Museum Education Office;
• Participates in the development of exhibitions pertaining to the archaeology collections of the New York State Museum.
Minimum Qualifications NON-COMPETITIVE MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
To be considered for appointment candidates must meet the minimum qualifications for this position. The qualifications are:
• Bachelor’s Degree and four years of professional experience or a Master’s degree and three years of professional experience or a doctoral degree and one year of professional experience.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Preference may be given to candidates who have:
• Ph.D. in archaeology, with experience in New York bioarchaeology.
• Experience with curating a museum collection in bioarchaeology.
• Experience conducting fieldwork in bioarchaeology.
• Experience with the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act and repatriation.
• An understanding of the NYS Unmarked Burial Site Protection Act.
• Experience in developing and producing museum exhibitions and public programs in bioarchaeology.
Additional Comments CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT: This will be a permanent, non-competitive appointment. Promotions and transfers may change appointees’ negotiating unit. Candidates should be aware that changes in negotiating units may affect their salary, insurance, and other benefits. Verification of qualifying degree will be required at the time of interview for all candidates.
This position will require 30% in-state/Statewide travel.
This position leads to a maximum salary of $126,875 based on annual performance advances. For new State employees appointed to graded positions, the annual salary is the hiring rate (beginning of the Salary Range) of the position. Promotion salaries are calculated by the NYS Office of the State Comptroller in accordance with NYS Civil Service Law, OSC Payroll rules and regulations and negotiated union contracts
