Duties Description As a Vocational Instructor, you would teach trades and skills to incarcerated individuals of the facility under general supervision. Your duties would include the preparation of lesson plans, course outlines, trades analyses, and may include shop layout planning, the establishment of shop safety programs and the maintenance of tools and equipment. You would be expected to manage a classroom environment appropriately. You would also be responsible for meeting each learner's individual needs and evaluating their progress as part of your record keeping duties. You may need to utilize technology as part of your instruction to enhance the educational setting.
Minimum Qualifications Level 1 - SG/12 - Four years of appropriate paid trades experience or an Associate's degree appropriate to the teaching field and two years of such experience or a Bachelor's degree appropriate to the teaching field and one year of such experience.
Level 2 - SG/13 - In addition to meeting the Level 1 qualifications, candidates must have completed six hours towards obtaining a New York State Certificate for teaching the appropriate trade specialty.
Level 3 - SG/15 - Possession of a valid provisional New York State Certificate for teaching the appropriate trade specialty.
Level 4 - SG/17 - Possession of a valid permanent New York State Certificate for teaching the appropriate trade specialty and two years of professional teaching experience.
This title is part of the NY for Emergency Limited Placement Statewide Program (NYS HELPS)
Additional Comments For the duration of the NY Helps program, this title may be filled via a non-competitive appointment, which means no exam is required but all candidates must meet the minimum qualifactions of the title for which they apply.
