Duties Description The New York State Education Department’s (NYSED) Office of Cultural Education (OCE) is seeking candidates for a Museum Exhibit Specialist 1 (Graphic Design), SG-15 position in the New York State Museum. This Office Reporting to the Museum Exhibit Specialist 2 (Graphic Design), this position will support the New York State Museum when the workload allows but will primarily serve the graphic design needs of the New York State Library, New York State Archives, and the Office of Cultural Education Deputy’s Office. The incumbent will help translate the work of these institutions into clear, accessible, and visually compelling materials that strengthen public understanding, engagement, and awareness of OCE’s programs, services, collections, research, and statewide impact.



The Cultural Education Center is home to the New York State Museum, Library, and Archives, among New York State’s most extraordinary public institutions—serving millions of New Yorkers, researchers, educators, students, and visitors through collections, educational programming, research services, publications, and statewide initiatives. This position will provide essential graphic design capacity where it is most needed, ensuring that the Library, Archives, and Deputy’s Office have high-quality, professional visual materials to communicate their mission, promote public access, and present institutional priorities with clarity and consistency. Working collaboratively with program, communications, and leadership staff, the incumbent will develop print and digital materials that are visually engaging, accessible, brand-consistent, and delivered on deadline. This position requires proficiency with the Adobe Creative Suite (with emphasis on InDesign, Illustrator, and Photoshop), a strong understanding of design principles (typography, color theory, layout, and composition), creativity, sound judgment, attention to detail, positive and open communication skills, and the ability to manage multiple priorities in a deadline-driven environment.



Duties of this position include, but are not limited to, the following:



Primarily support the New York State Library, New York State Archives, and the Office of Cultural Education Deputy’s Office through professional graphic design services, with support to the New York State Museum where workload allows;



Collaborate with program areas to design and implement cohesive wayfinding systems that improve navigation, accessibility, and visitor experience;



Design and produce public-facing print and digital materials, including publications, educational materials, reports, presentations, signage, promotional materials, digital graphics, branded communications, display materials, and related visual content;



Develop and maintain layouts, templates, graphics, illustrations, and branded design assets that support consistent visual identity across OCE materials;



Ensure all materials are accurate, accessible, visually consistent, and aligned with agency branding, editorial, accessibility, and communications standards;

Prepare design files for appropriate production and distribution methods, including printing, digital publication, web use, presentations, and other formats;



Manage multiple graphic design assignments, timelines, revisions, and competing priorities to ensure timely completion of projects;



Update and revise existing graphic materials to maintain accuracy, consistency, accessibility, and professional quality;



Coordinate with vendors, printers, and internal staff as needed to support production, delivery, and implementation of graphic materials and;



Perform other related duties as assigned to support the graphic design, communications, and public engagement goals of the Office of Cultural Education.

Minimum Qualifications Reassignment: Candidates must have one year of permanent non-competitive or?55b/c service as a Museum Exhibit Specialist 1 (Graphic Design).

NON-COMPETITIVE MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Five years of production experience in graphic design services for digital output and publications.

Additional Comments CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT: This will be a permanent, non-competitive appointment. Promotions and transfers may change appointees’ negotiating unit. Candidates should be aware that changes in negotiating units may affect their salary, insurance, and other benefits.



This position allows for the opportunity to telecommute up to 30% each bi-weekly pay period and is granted at the discretion of the supervisor and the appointing office.



This position leads to a maximum salary of $62,477 based on annual performance advances. For new State employees appointed to graded positions, the annual salary is the hiring rate (beginning of the Salary Range) of the position. Promotion salaries are calculated by the NYS Office of the State Comptroller in accordance with NYS Civil Service Law, OSC Payroll rules and regulations and negotiated union contracts
