Minimum Qualifications for Non-Competitive Appointments:
Candidates for this position must have a Bachelor's Degree in environmental sciences, environmental policy, or a related field, and three years of professional research experience in the appropriate field; OR Master's Degree in environmental sciences, environmental policy, or a related field, and two years of such experience; OR Doctorate in environmental sciences, environmental policy, or a related field.
Preferred Additional Qualifications:
-Competence in statistical analysis of large data sets using multivariate statistical approaches and R programming; manipulation and evaluation of large datasets
-Knowledge of New York State and Clean Water Act regulations as they relate to water quality monitoring and assessment.
-Excellent written, oral and interpersonal communication skills
Duties Description The position incumbent will:
-- Develop and conduct biological monitoring activities for the Statewide Ambient Water Quality Monitoring Program and Stream Biomonitoring Unit, including macroinvertebrates, fish and diatoms.
-- Redevelop and maintain biological database. Develop, document, and standardize use of R statistical software for analysis of data.
--Perform taxonomic work on macroinvertebrate samples, including identification of Chironomidae and Oligochaeta.
-- Develop and conduct research to assess and document restoration of aquatic communities in Great Lakes Areas of Concern (AOCs), as defined in beneficial use impairments.
-- Work with modeling staff on the development of total maximum daily loads (TMDL) and implementation, promoting appropriate biological endpoints for impaired waterbodies.
-- Design and oversee appropriate long-term monitoring projects to assess success of riparian corridor tree planting in the Great Lakes basin.
-- Must be able to travel in New York State, with significant overnight travel during the sampling season. He or she must be able to work from boats, on uneven terrain, in all weather conditions, and to be able to lift objects up to 50 pounds.
Additional Comments The travel percentage will vary depending upon season.
