Minimum Qualifications Minimum Qualifications for Non-Competitive Appointments:
A Bachelor's Degree and two years of professional research experience in the appropriate field, or a Master's Degree in the appropriate field and one year of professional research experience in that field. Strong written and oral communication skills are required. A Master of Science or a higher degree in Physical or Atmospheric Sciences or related field is preferred.
Area of Specialty is Air Pollution. Preference will be given to candidates who possess experience in the following fields: trace environmental measurement research, advanced laboratory instrumentation, statistical analysis and interpretation of data.
Duties Description The Bureau of Air Quality Surveillance is responsible for the operation of the ambient air monitoring network for New York State. The network measures air pollutants at more than 50 sites across the state, using continuous and/or manual instrumentation. Our SUNY East Campus facility located in Rensselaer houses our analysis laboratories and field instrumentation maintenance & repair center. Under the technical and administrative supervision of a Research Scientist IV, the Research Scientist 1 will be responsible for:
•the operation and maintenance of state-of-the-art analytical systems for non-routine analysis of contaminants in the ambient air in support of community investigations and citizen science, conducting ground breaking research and development work to select proper methodologies for sampling and analysis of various classes of chemicals unique to each situation and preparing all necessary quality system documents, such as Quality Assurance Project Plan and Standard Operating Procedures, for associated projects.
•serving as the backup analyst in VOC canister and carbonyl sorbent tube analyses for the National Air Toxics Trends Station (NATTS) and State toxics networks;
•providing input and technical support for the design and implementation of community air screen projects - verifying and analyzing resulting data including QA/QC measurements and assisting in the preparation of reports;
•researching and evaluating new air pollution measurement technologies, documenting and publishing findings that are useful to fellow professionals in the field; and,
•coordinating and working with laboratory personnel and site operators to ensure sampling equipment, sample shipments, and supplies are properly maintained to meet data capture requirements.
Additional Comments Must have a valid driver's license or demonstrate the ability to meet the transportation needs of the position. Travel and overnight travel may be required.
